Discounted Stila Palette & Individual Sigma brushes

Hey ladies, I have to start out by saying, "wow, it's been a long time!" Sorry about that... life has kidnapped me, so it has been very hard to stay in touch with all of you :). I'm back for a quick post, though, and I hope you'll find it useful.

If you're like me, you take every available opportunity to look at cosmetics online and hope to find a great deal. Well, our software at work is down right now, so the only thing I can really do is surf the web. I started out at Sephora and noticed on their homepage that they have a sale going on for Stila's Backstage Beauty Eye Shadow Palette - The Runway Look. It was originally $40, but now it's on sale for $20... BUT WAIT!!! I have better news :).

I remembered seeing this palette on 2 other websites: www.beautycrunch.com and www.allcosmeticswholesale.com. At Beauty Crunch, the palette is being sold for $15 and All Cosmetics Wholesale is selling it for $16.99. I've heard a few things about the reliability of Beauty Crunch, so I decided to purchase it from ACW. Yay for $3.01 cheaper than Sephora! :)

ALSO... (yes, there's more!), if you haven't noticed, ACW also sells Sigma brushes, including the brushes from their new Pro set. I was super excited when I stumbled upon them and decided to order a couple of the ones I've had my eye on. I ordered the SS138 (tapered face brush) for $18.99 and the SS275 (angled shader) for $8.50. I have no idea why Sigma doesn't sell these brushes individually on their website, but I find it kind-of upsetting. I'm sure they want people to pony up and buy the entire Pro set, but I can't just drop $149 on brushes. After all, if you bought any of the other sets (like I did), you probably don't need or want every single brush in the Pro kit, which means they will go to waste because they'll just be collecting dust.

Another thing I really like about ACW is that their shipping is reasonable. I paid $5.50 for the 3 items, which isn't too bad. They also ship Internationally and I don't know what their rates are, but I do know they have a lot of information posted on their website for International customers. So far my experience with them has been a positive one. If that changes, I'll let you know :).

I love reading when people post these types of blog entries, so I finally decided to do one myself:

In:
Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation - I wore this for a couple of years and have since then been trying other foundations. I decided to get a sample of it and I still LOVE it and will be converting when my Revlon Colorstay runs out.
Creme Cup lipstick from MAC - my new favorite lipstick. It's not too dark against my pale skin and is very pretty, feminine, and flattering :). I can see this getting repurchased over and over again.
Sparkles! - Resort Life lip gelee from MAC is my new favorite gloss. It's so sparkly and fun :). I'm also loving shimmery Bare Escentuals eyeshadows as well as MAC pigments. They make me happy :).
2010 Winter Olympics - I loved sitting on the couch all weekend with my husband watching the Olympics. There's something so fun about watching athletes come from all around the world to compete. (BTW, Amy, I cheered when Ireland's team came in during the opening ceremony... Jason looked at me like I was crazy, ha :)).
MakeupAlley Swaps - I've completed close to 35 swaps in the last 3 weeks...while the packaging and shipping is a pain, it's so much fun to get new goodies! :)

Out:
Dry Skin - I'm horrible at moisturizing my skin on a regular basis, but I have to make this itching stop! My arms and legs are the worst areas and I have to remind myself every morning to slather the moisturizer on :P.
Cold Weather blahs - Once I get home from work, I just want to snuggle up in a blanket and veg out for the evening. While this is fun, it's also lazy and I'm not going to lose weight sitting on the couch! The cold weather keeps me from doing any outdoor activities, though. I guess I need to stock up on Biggest Loser workout dvd's :).
Growing hair out - My hair is at an in-between point that's very annoying to style. Most days, I end up throwing it in a ponytail, which is just boring. I want my long hair back! Please remind me about this if I ever decide to cut it again ;).
Maintaining highlights - I love having my hair highlighted, but they're such a pain to maintain. I don't have the time or money to go get them touched up every 2 months, but then I end up with 2 inches of dirty blonde roots. Maybe I can teach my husband how to do it so that I can chill out at home while he does my hair, ha :).
Unused Cosmetics - I feel bad because a lot of the makeup I buy rarely or never gets used. My husband has taken notice of this lately and keeps commenting on my stash... I think my hauls will probably slow down considerably for a while :(.

The Perfect Concealer?

I'll start out by saying I know that concealer preference is just about as personal as foundation. It really depends on your skin type and your needs (cover dark circles, blemishes, etc.), price, and lots of other factors. That being said, I've recently been on the hunt for the perfect concealer.

I've mainly been using concealers in pot-form, such as Benefit's Erase Paste and MUFE's Camouflage Cream. However, after using them (rather, not using them much at all) for about 6 months, I've come to the realization that they don't really work for me. The only concealers that I use on a regular basis are from Everyday Minerals. I use the Multi-Tasking Concealer and the Intensive Fair Concealer. These are nice for covering slight discolorations and the occasional under-eye circle, but I'm still looking for something better. I really hope it exists :).

The 2 concealers I have my eyes on now are "liquid" form and I think I may be on to something really great! They are MUFE's Full Cover Concealer ($30) and Amazing Cosmetics' Amazing Concealer ($42). After doing a lot of research and reading a LOT of reviews on both of these products, I think I'll be starting out with the MUFE concealer. First, because of the price (even though it has less product). Second, because I think MUFE's concealers are formulated more with different skin types in mind, whereas Amazing seems to be more universal. While that may work fine, I want to be catered to and I feel like I have more of a choice with MUFE.

Have you tried either of these concealers? Would you recommend them or is there another one that blows your mind? :) Please let me know! Not that I need to spend more money, but I'm itching to test these out :).

MakeupAlley Swaps

Sorry I've been MIA again (and again and again...), but I've been clearing out all the makeup products I never (or rarely) wear and posting them on http://www.makeupalley.com/ for swaps. I've gotten a huge response and have been spending a lot of time after work on putting packages together. Yesterday I shipped 7 packages, tonight I will ship 4, and tomorrow I already have another 3 swaps planned that I need to put together and ship. It's madness, really, but it's also a lot of fun. I'll get a lot of products that I've been wanting to try and I'll even get some products from overseas, such as dazzledusts, Jemma Kidd (which we have some of in the US, but not as much as they have available), and a Sleek palette. I'm really really excited, but behind all that enthusiasm is a tiny bit of worry and skepticism. A lot of trust goes into swapping and I'm hoping that everyone I've made "deals" with is honest and will follow through with their end. I have taken some precautions, but still... it takes a lot of faith to do this!

Have you ever done a swap on makeupalley and what was your experience like? Good/Bad? Have you ever come across a swaplifter? Let me know if you've ever tried it and how it went :).

MAC Goodies

The drought has ended! I haven't purchased a MAC product from their collections in the past 5 months.... until yesterday. I ordered a few things online from their MAC in Lillyland and All Ages, All Races, All Sexes collections and I'm so excited! I also got a few things from their permanent line that I'm really happy with too :). I'll film a haul video tonight and post it here :).

Did you buy anything from either of these collections? What do you think about them?

Good evening, everyone! I just wanted to stop in really quick and let you know what's been going on. I realize I haven't posted in a while, but I was extremely busy with Christmas and New Year's celebrations... and then my dog passed away last week :(. I've been devastated and haven't been able to wear any makeup besides foundation and waterproof mascara... so I look kind-of like a mess right now. Plus, all of the crying has given me bags under my eyes and I've been having trouble sleeping. All-in-all, it's been an awful past 4 days, so I hope you all understand. Every time I start talking or thinking about our puppy, I start crying, so it might be a couple more days before you hear from me again.

Thanks for your kind words (on twitter) and support during this hard time. It's crazy how much of an affect animals have on our lives, and how much it hurts when they're gone :(.

Rest in peace, Magnum. We love you.

Missing my hair!

Before I cut my hair this past June, I was so excited about trying a short style and doing something completely new for my look. I donated my hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, which I also felt great about. For the 5 months after getting it cut, I had been in a honeymoon phase and I still loved everything about it. Until now. I'm missing my long hair soooooooo much! I keep seeing pictures of me with my hair long and curled all pretty and I want to look like that again immediately :). I know that it will take some time, but I still wish it would grow longer.

Have you ever made a drastic change to your hair that you eventually regretted (even a little bit)? Do you do anything special with your hair during the "grow-out" phase?

Product Rave - Mary Kay Mineral Powder Foundation

I've never been a huge fan of mineral powder foundations. Mainly because I've always had troublesome skin that's very oily. Since I moved to a humid climate my skin has gotten worse, so I've turned to thicker, heavier coverage liquid foundations such as Make Up For Ever's Mat Velvet + and Revlon Colorstay. I love those foundations and they work for me, but I've still kept my hopes up that someday I could find a mineral foundation that worked for me. Up until this week, I've only used mineral foundations as setting powder for my liquid foundation. It covers better than regular powder, doesn't irritate my skin as much as normal loose powder, and gives more of a matte finish.

I decided to take a chance on Mary Kay's mineral powder foundation and I'm so glad I did! I don't know what's different about it, but I am really loving it :). It comes in quite a large sifter jar and I use my Sigma kabuki brush to apply it. All I have to do is tap my brush in a little bit of product, swirl it in the lid, and then buff it onto my face. It gives such a nice finish and feels really nice and light on my skin. It isn't exactly matte, but it doesn't claim to be. Nor is it oil controlling (that I know of), but it does a pretty good job at keeping my skin balanced - moisturized, but not oily. And when I touch my face throughout the day (bad habit), it doesn't come off on my fingers.

Now for the negative:
If you take a look at the sifter jar, you'll see that it doesn't have the new "click-lock" closure that the Bare Minerals foundation has. This doesn't bother me, it just means that if I travel, I would have to cover the sifter with tape or something so that the powder doesn't fill the top of the container.

That's the only downside that I can find about this. The price is very affordable at $18, which is much better than Bare Minerals Matte at $28 (and I prefer this over BM). It currently comes in 6 colors, however I believe they're going to add another 4 (or more) colors in mid-December.

Also, I bought all of the products mentioned in this post and my opinion has not been influenced by anyone.

YouTube Contest!

I have passed the 200 subscriber mark (yay!) and I promised to do an actual contest when I got there, so here we are! :)

I just ordered the contest prizes yesterday and they're currently en route, so now I have to decide on a theme. That's where you, my subscribers/followers come in :). What kind of look would you want to create for a contest? The two that I was thinking of are "favorite everyday look"... but that's kind-of boring. The other one I was thinking of is "favorite New Year's Eve/Holiday look". I think I might go with the NYE/Holiday theme, but if any of you give me a better idea (& I choose it), I'll send you a prize to thank you :).

So please, give me your contest theme ideas asap and I'll decide what to do this weekend :). Thanks for your help!

Hair Experiences

After going brunette for about a month, the color started fading and didn't work with my skin tone at all anymore. It ended up being a dingy brownish-red, but it was kind-of metallic looking and just weird. So I used my birthday (right before Thanksgiving) as an opportunity to visit a friend and get my highlights back, as well as a trim :). I'll try to post a picture soon, but I just wanted to share how much more comfortable and happy I am with my hair now. It really can change your whole look and make you feel like a different person!

However, one thing that bothers me about getting my hair done is that you're at the mercy of the stylist and you can oftentimes leave the salon feeling very awkward. I'm a very non-confrontational person, so I avoid making comments if I don't like the way they style it. If I know that the cut and color are good, I can usually deal with a poofy style until I get out to my car. Also, they can sometimes use products I really don't care for. For an example of both (style and products), she styled my hair by back-combing it and making it very poofy (hello, Texas hair!). She also put all of my bangs across my forehead, which doesn't work because of my oily skin (and it made me look like I was 12 years old). Finally, she used a spray that smelled like peppermint and it was very suffocating. I kept smelling it throughout that evening and finally had to put it in a ponytail to get the smell away from my face. Gag! :)

Like I said, the color and cut are great, but have you had any experiences like mine? What are your best and worst salon memories? Let me know in a comment below :).

1. Mood: Fairly positive, but soooo ready to leave work and go home!

2. Celine Dion power ballads? - They used to make me feel so emotional and dramatic when I was in high school. I usually listened to her songs when I was "in love" with a new crush and it just heightened the ridiculousness of the situation, ha :).

3. Least favorite vegetable? - brussel sprouts or onions. Yuck.

4. Thanksgiving plans? - going to the in-laws house to watch football and eat until our stomachs stretch. Maybe I should wear PJ pants? :)

5. Eyes/lips/cheeks: once again, I'm looking quite plain with mascara, MAC Personal Taste lipglass, and Coralista blush (my go-to) with Hoola bronzer as a contour.

6. Do you have any wardrobe pet peeves? yep, I have a long torso and shirts always shrink up so that I look like a kid wearing too-small clothes :P.

7. Ever kept a makeup or beauty product you actually bought for someone else? - I usually don't buy makeup products for other people as gifts. I just give products away that I don't use or like :D.

8. Last yummy thing you prepared for yourself? - I made a sausage pasta w/ cream sauce and broccoli last night and it was uber yummy :).

9. Outfit: pink cable knit sweater, dark pink scarf, dark wash wide-leg jeans, and brown mary-jane flats.

10. Weekly goals: Have a great birthday (Wednesday, yay!), and enjoy my Thanksgiving break off from work (I only have to work Mon., Tues., and Wednesday) :).

Wow, it's been exactly a month since my last entry, so I'll start with a big SORRY!!! I wanted to do something easy, so I'm copying a list from Karen over at www.makeupandbeautyblog.com. 1. Mood - fairly good. I'm starting to feel a cold coming on, so that stinks, but I'm trying to look on the bright side ;).

2. Do you make your bed? - nope. I leave the house at 6:45, which is when my husband rolls out of bed, so if it gets made, it's pretty much a miracle :).

3. Have you started holiday shopping? - I picked up some Christmas tins and miniature bread pans from Michael's over the weekend, but that's about it. I need to get started! I'm hoping to find some good sales after Thanksgiving. Does anyone have any recommendations?

4. Favorite fruit? - probably raspberries or strawberries... my mom grew them when I was growing up, so I could go outside and eat them fresh :D. Yummy!

5. Eyes/lips/cheeks: Plain Jane (as usual on weekdays) - mascara, Benefit lip gloss in "friends in high places" and Benefit Coralista.

6. In what ways are you like your mom? - As much as we try to fight it, there are still small ways in which we're like our mothers :). For me, I love to shop and I also worry about nearly everything.

8. Long or short nails? - I like mine mid-length to long, except they like to start chipping and peeling when they start looking really pretty... funny how that works ;).

Sephora Friends & Family Sale!

I don't know about you, but I just love a good sale... especially when it's for make-up and beauty related items :). Sephora's Friends & Family sale is going to run from October 19th (this coming Monday, woo!) through November 2nd. I've been trying so hard not to spend money, but I'll probably make an exception for this. The code for the sale is FF2009 and it gives you 20% off everything (I think) you buy :).

Shopping at Sephora - What would you get?

I bought the Laura Mercier Oil Free Flawless Face Kit from Sephora a couple weeks ago because I was curious about all the LM products that people have been raving about, especially the Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer. Well, once I received the kit and tried everything out, I was very disappointed. The only thing in the kit that I was semi-impressed with was the concealer pot. I'm not going to keep the whole kit just to use that, though, so I'm going to return it to Sephora and have a mini-shopping-spree-exchange :D. I have $65 to spend and I know a couple of things I'm going to get, but I need your help with one thing I actually kind-of need.

I just ran out of my body wash and need a quick replacement (my husband's Irish Spring soap doesn't make me feel very feminine ;)). I'm going to try one of Philosophy's Bath & Shower Gels, but here's where I need your help. There are so many scents to choose from and I just can't decide which one to try! I'm torn between Vanilla Birthday Cake, Cinnamon Buns, Coconut Frosting, and Pumpkin Spice Muffin. Have you tried any of their body products? If so, which one is your favorite? Please leave me some input below so that I can make an informed decision :).

And finally, if you had $65 to spend at Sephora (guilt-free!), what would you buy? Make-up? Hair products? Perfume? Body products? Leave a comment below with your picks! :)

Mascara Advertising Vent

I've been searching for a mascara that I can call my "Holy Grail" for a really long time. I've found some that I like, but I'm always looking for one that's better. One thing I've noticed during my search that really bothers me is the advertising. Every commercial or picture that I've seen has a woman wearing false eyelashes, which doesn't really represent the mascara at all. Sure, it can be a good visual of what the product is supposed to do, but to me it's very misleading. I want pictures of real eyelashes: before and after shots or pictures of the same woman wearing two different brands and how they differ. Any woman can put on false eyelashes, but that's not what I'm shopping for.

What do you think? Do you think it's dishonest/misleading or do you think it's fine? Leave a comment below :).

Flakes

After blaming multiple mascaras over the past 6 months for flaking under my eyes, I think I have finally realized that it's not the mascara's fault. And for that, I owe them all a sincere apology, so... I'm sorry!

I think the culprit is my Coastal Scents gel liner and I'm wondering if anyone else has tried it and had the same problem?

Regardless, I think I'm going to try a better (more "upscale") brand, such as MAC or Bobbi Brown. Before I make an official decision, I wanted to get your input. What's your favorite brand and why? Please leave a comment below! :)

Good morning, everyone! I hope you're doing well :). I'm excited this morning because MAC's newest collection, Make-Up Art Cosmetics, is out in the US! It has some really great Fall colors and there's plenty to choose from! As with most recent collections, though, the more I've looked at swatches and reviews, the smaller my list has gotten. Oh well, at least my wallet will be happy :). Anyway, here are the items I'm planning on picking up:

Heritage Rouge Pigment ($19.50)
The Perfect Cheek blush ($18.50)
Personal Taste Lipglass (maybe)($14.00)
Plush Lash Mascara ($13.00)

Back in the land of the living

Hey there, sorry I've been MIA for the past week (or more?). I came down with a cold and have been trying to deal with that. Today is actually the first day I've mustered up the strength to apply a full face of makeup AND fix my hair :). I truly looked awful Tuesday-Thursday of this week. I had a bad case of Rudolph nose, chapped lips, and my face broke out... it was a beautiful sight ;).

Anyway, on to more pleasant things... depending on how you look at it. School starts in my county next Monday, which means I will have to get up earlier to beat the school buses through my neighborhood. That also means I will have to change my makeup routine a little bit. Usually if I want to fix my hair properly that means my makeup will be a little more plain... and vice-versa. Does anyone else have the same problem? Does your routine change at all when school starts?

Cleaning up Fallout

I decided to wear Tempting and Woodwinked (MAC) eyeshadows today, which means fallout city. Sometimes it's not too bad, but today it looked like I had 2 black eyes! What I usually do to clean it up is use my Sigma 182 kabuki brush to swipe it away and then I brush on a little bit of powder to cover up any leftover shimmer. That didn't work today, so after powdering, I had to use a little bit of liquid foundation and then I set that with more powder. Once I was done with that, I looked in the mirror and I looked like a wax figure! Not the look I was going for :).

I think next time I'm going to try either using a tissue under my eyes while applying or start by putting a layer or two of powder on so that it will be easier to swipe away when I'm finished.
